The U.S. Bankruptcy Court warned on Apr. 15 that debtors across the country have been receiving fraudulent phone calls from individuals claiming to represent the court and demanding payment or personal information.

This alert is important for those involved in bankruptcy proceedings, as scammers are targeting vulnerable individuals by impersonating court officials and requesting sensitive data or money.

According to the announcement, these phone calls are not legitimate and do not originate from the Bankruptcy Court. The court emphasized that it will never contact a debtor by phone to request payment. “Do not provide the caller with any personal information, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, or money,” said Vania S. Allen, Clerk of Court.

Individuals who receive such calls are urged to refrain from sharing any financial or personal details with callers. The court advises anyone with questions about this scam alert to contact them directly at 404-215-1000 for verification and assistance.

The warning highlights ongoing concerns about scams targeting people in financial distress and underscores the importance of verifying communications before taking action.
