In a recent decision by the Supreme Court of Georgia, Gavin Henderson was found guilty of malice murder, cruelty to children in the first degree, and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony. The charges stem from the fatal stabbing of his sister, Kiara Henderson. Despite Henderson’s appeal for a new trial on grounds including improper admission of prior-acts evidence and failure to instruct the jury on voluntary manslaughter, the court upheld his conviction. The court ruled that evidence of a previous assault on another sister was admissible to demonstrate intent and that there was no basis for a voluntary manslaughter charge. Consequently, Henderson’s life sentence without parole remains in effect.
