In a recent legal filing, Peter Barimah Jr., represented by his mother Angela Dorcoo, has filed a lawsuit against the Fulton County School District (FCSD) in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. The plaintiffs allege that FCSD discriminated against Peter based on his disabilities, which include a rare genetic disorder and various learning and physical impairments. The complaint details multiple instances where FCSD allegedly failed to provide necessary accommodations, such as vision therapy and assistive technology, thus denying Peter access to public education on equal terms with non-disabled students. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other federal statutes.
The plaintiffs claim that despite repeated requests for reasonable accommodations from August 2020 through May 2024, FCSD intentionally denied these requests, leading to significant educational setbacks and physical harm for Peter. The suit also accuses FCSD of retaliating against Angela Dorcoo for advocating on behalf of her son by further limiting Peter’s access to education. This case highlights ongoing challenges faced by students with disabilities in accessing equitable educational opportunities.
