Christine Bell has filed a federal lawsuit against an Atlanta police officer, alleging wrongful arrest and violation of her constitutional rights. The complaint was lodged in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia on January 12, 2025, naming Officer Kamari Woods as the defendant. The case revolves around an incident that occurred on April 1, 2024, when Bell was mistakenly arrested due to a warrant meant for another individual.
According to the complaint, Christine Bell was driving home with her children when she was pulled over by Officer Woods. He believed there was an outstanding warrant for her arrest from Dekalb County. However, this warrant was actually intended for someone named Christal Bell. Despite significant discrepancies between Christine Bell’s personal details and those on the warrant—such as differences in name spelling, date of birth, height, and weight—Officer Woods proceeded with the arrest. “There was no reasonably objective probable cause to arrest Plaintiff,” states the complaint, highlighting that Woods had access to Bell’s identification which clearly did not match the warrant’s description.
The lawsuit accuses Officer Woods of illegal seizure and arrest under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 and violations of the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution. It argues that Woods acted with deliberate indifference and reckless disregard for Bell’s civil rights by failing to verify critical information before making the arrest. The plaintiff claims she suffered mental trauma and psychological distress due to this incident.
Christine Bell is seeking several forms of relief from the court. She demands a jury trial and requests that judgment be entered in her favor against Officer Woods in an amount determined by jurors’ enlightened conscience. Additionally, she seeks nominal, compensatory, special, and punitive damages where applicable; attorneys’ fees under 42 U.S.C. § 1988; all costs associated with this action; and any further legal or equitable relief deemed appropriate by the court.
Representing Christine Bell is attorney Matthew Gebhardt from Gebhardt Law Firm LLC based in Atlanta, Georgia. The case has been assigned Case ID: 1:26-cv-00179-MLB but does not list specific judges overseeing it at this time.
