John Woodbury, a 35-year-old resident of Roswell, Georgia, has been sentenced to seventeen months in prison for threatening then-FBI Director Christopher Wray. The sentencing follows Woodbury’s guilty plea to charges of transmitting threats.
“My office has zero tolerance for threats against law enforcement officers,” stated U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg. “Threatening to harm public servants who enforce our criminal laws weakens the foundation of our society and will be punished accordingly.”
FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Paul Brown emphasized the importance of protecting public servants: “The functioning of our democracy requires that our country’s public servants be able to do their jobs without fearing for their lives.”
According to information presented in court by U.S. Attorney Hertzberg, Woodbury posted a threatening message on 4chan.org on June 7, 2023. In this message, he included what was claimed to be Director Wray’s home address and incited violence against him.
United States District Judge Sarah E. Geraghty sentenced Woodbury earlier today. Following his prison term, he will undergo three years of supervised release after being convicted of transmitting a threat in interstate commerce.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation leading to these charges.
