The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia reported collections and forfeitures totaling more than $77 million during fiscal year 2025, which ended on September 30, 2025. The office collected over $35 million in civil and criminal penalties and forfeited nearly $8 million in assets.
“These collections and forfeitures underscore my office’s dedication to securing financial justice for victims and the public,” said U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg. “We and our law enforcement partners will aggressively use all available legal means to hold wrongdoers accountable, compensate crime victims, and protect the public fisc by collecting debts owed to the government.”
Criminal defendants are required to pay restitution to their victims as well as fines and assessments that support the Department of Justice’s Crime Victims Fund. In fiscal year 2025, the office collected more than $17 million from restitution, fines, and assessments imposed in criminal cases.
In affirmative civil enforcement cases—where the government seeks recovery of funds lost to fraud or collects fines for non-criminal violations—the office brought in over $18 million. Collaboration with other Department of Justice divisions resulted in an additional $34 million collected through both civil and criminal matters.
The Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section utilized both civil and criminal forfeiture tools to seize assets connected to illegal activities. In total, over $4.5 million was forfeited through criminal cases, while more than $1.5 million came from civil cases. An additional $1.8 million was recovered via nonjudicial processes with federal law enforcement partners.
Forfeited property is used by the Department of Justice for compensating crime victims, supporting law enforcement agencies at various levels, and other purposes related to public safety. In fiscal year 2025, more than $3 million was returned directly to crime victims while over $5 million was shared with law enforcement agencies.
